Games That Help Make Learning Athletics Fun
Below are four of my favourite games to use when coaching young athletes. Give them a try and let me know how it goes!
The “Hurdles Shuttle Relay” is a shuttle relay race between teams where each athlete runs a hurdles section in one direction and a sprints section in the other direction.
“Escape from the Space Monsters” is a team game in which young athletes attempt to escape from a “space monster prison” by successfully clearing a flexible high jump training bar.
“Asteroids” is a shot put team game during which young athletes score team points according to where their shot lands.
“Discus Train Tracks” is a game that can be played with young athletes to help them develop control over their discus release.
Now You Try Them
Try to find the opportunity to stage one or more of these games with a group of kids. I would love for you to report back and let me know how it goes!
