Recommended Reading For Coaches: “Legacy” By James Kerr

Inspiration & Ideas for Coaches of Young Athletes

20160811_152536 (2)You certainly don’t have to be a fan of rugby, or the All Blacks, to benefit from reading this gem.

This book heavily influenced my ideas about empowering groups of young athletes, and building a culture around a team, group or squad. I took notes as I read it, which is always a good indication of the impact that a book is having on the reader.

As someone who has coached representative teams for more than 20 years, I was fascinated, refreshed and inspired by its messages. Examples of the influence that this book had on me can be found in my article How to Empower Young Athletes.

“Legacy – What the All Blacks Can Teach Us About the Business of Life” is not just about rugby. The book delves into the culture, philosophies, rituals and practices of the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team to highlight 15 lessons in leadership that relate to leaders, groups and teams everywhere.

One thing that I really like about this book is that not only does it present broad philosophies, it also provides practical examples that are transferable to many other situations in sport and life. I constantly found myself relating what I was reading to my own coaching situations.

Who is this book for?

This book is for leaders in all fields and it is particularly relevant to sports coaches, both new and experienced.

While not specifically about young athletes, coaches of young athletes will certainly be able to gain ideas and inspiration from the lessons, ideas and stories presented in the book.

NOTE: I would not recommend this book for younger or more sensitive readers as it contains some adult themes and occasional coarse language.

Overall this is a wonderful book that will provide coaches of young athletes with ideas and inspiration that will positively influence their approach to team, squad or group coaching.

I wish that I had access to the information contained in this book years ago. It has already made a positive difference to my coaching and managing of groups and teams. I can see myself referring to this book again and again for many years to come.
